Before you start
You’ll need just a couple of things:
- The device you want to protect (phone, laptop or both).
- An email address.
- A payment method (card or PayPal). There’s a 30-day money-back if you change your mind.
Your VPN guideA VPN is genuinely a 5-minute setup. Install, log in, tap connect — that’s the whole thing.
-
Choose a plan & create your NordVPN account
Long-term plans are far cheaper per month than monthly — but always check the renewal price before you commit.
- Go to the NordVPN site and pick a plan (the longer plans are the cheapest per month).
- Create your account with your email and pay.
- Remember: there’s a 30-day money-back, so you can try it risk-free.

- On phone: install from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- On computer: download from the official website only — never from a random link.
- Open the app once it’s installed.
What you’ll see: The app’s login screen.

Log in & connect
This is the part people are surprised by — it’s basically one tap.
- Log in with your NordVPN account.
- Tap the big “Quick Connect” (or power) button. The app picks the fastest server for you.
- Allow the VPN configuration / permission prompt if your device asks.
What you’ll see: A “Connected” status and a new virtual location. You’re now protected.

Pick the right server
Which server you choose depends on what you want:
- Fastest & most secure browsing: pick the nearest country (or just use Quick Connect).
- Watching content from another country: pick a server in that country, then open your streaming app.
- Travelling: connect back to your home country to use your usual accounts.
What you’ll see: Your apparent location changes to the server’s country.

Check you’re protected
A quick sanity check so you know it’s working.
- Search “what is my IP” in your browser — it should show the VPN server’s location, not your real one.
- Turn on the app’s kill switch in settings (it blocks traffic if the VPN ever drops).
What you’ll see: An IP/location that matches your chosen server.
Your VPN guideThat’s it — you’re set. Next time it’s just: open app, tap connect.
Troubleshooting
The app won’t connect
Try a different server or protocol (the app’s settings let you switch, e.g. to WireGuard/NordLynx). Restart the app, and make sure your underlying internet works with the VPN off.
My connection feels slow
Connect to a server closer to you, or use the app’s “fastest server” option. Wired connections and the WireGuard-based protocol are usually quickest.
Streaming still says I’m in the wrong country
Fully close and reopen the streaming app after connecting, clear its cache, and try another server in that country. Some providers have dedicated streaming servers — use those.
The VPN keeps disconnecting
Enable the kill switch so you’re never exposed, allow the app to run in the background, and disable battery “optimisation” for it on Android.
